RELATIONAL DESIGN FOR ORGANIZATIONS

Every organization is a relational ecosystem.

Tending the Relational Ecosystem

Every organization is more than its policies, departments, roles, and workflows. It is a living relational ecosystem.

Communication, trust, leadership, conflict, belonging, responsibility, culture, and collaboration continually influence one another. When strain develops in one part of the system, its effects can ripple throughout the whole.

Open Compass partners with organizations to make these relational dynamics more visible and intentionally cultivate the conditions that support relational cohesion, skillful honesty, trust, collaboration, meaningful participation, and the capacity to navigate tension and repair rupture together.

The work is not brought in as a predetermined program. Every engagement is collaboratively designed with the organization, shaped by its people, culture, relationships, challenges, capacities, values, and aspirations.

The goal isn’t to make every workplace conflict-free. It is to strengthen the relational ecosystem so the people within it are increasingly equipped to communicate honestly, remain curious through complexity, address rupture when it occurs, and participate intentionally in the culture they create together.

WHEN ORGANIZATIONS COME TO OPEN COMPASS

Organizations may reach out when something isn’t working—or because they want to intentionally strengthen what’s already working before strain develops.

This work can support:

Communication breakdowns

• Leadership transitions

• Team conflict

• Low trust

• Organizational silos

• Burnout and disengagement

• Growth or restructuring

• Misalignment between stated values and lived culture

• Unrepaired workplace rupture

• Challenges with collaboration or cohesion

• A desire for greater skillful honesty and meaningful communication

• A desire to build stronger relational infrastructure before something goes wrong

NO TWO RELATIONAL ECOSYSTEMS ARE THE SAME

Open Compass does not bring a one-size-fits-all curriculum into an organization and prescribe how its people should relate.

We begin with the ecosystem that already exists.

Together, we explore what is happening, what matters to the people involved, what is supporting connection and collaboration, where friction or disconnection is emerging, and what the organization wants to cultivate.

From there, Open Compass and the organization co-design the engagement itself—from the questions we explore and experiences we facilitate to the practices, structures, rituals, and relational agreements that may become part of the organization’s ongoing culture.

What emerges might include facilitated dialogue, Relational Mapping, leadership inquiry, communication practices, team experiences, conflict and repair processes, cross-department connection, collaborative decision-making practices, or something we design together that doesn’t yet have a name.

The work responds to the system rather than asking the system to conform to the work.

HOW WE WORK

01 — Discovery + Relational Inquiry

We begin by listening. Through conversations, interviews, observation, Relational Mapping, surveys, or other forms of collaborative inquiry, we develop a richer picture of the organization’s existing relational ecosystem.

Not simply What’s wrong? but:

What’s here? What’s working? What isn’t being said? Where is there energy? Where is there strain? What matters to the people who make up this system?

02 — Alignment + Co-Design

Together with leadership and, where appropriate, members of the broader organization, we identify patterns, priorities, capacities, and possibilities.

Rather than receiving a standardized intervention, we co-design what comes next.

03 — Facilitated Organizational Experiences

Depending on what we discover, Open Compass may facilitate dialogue, Relational Mapping, workshops, leadership experiences, communication practices, conflict navigation, rupture and repair, cross-team connection, reflection, or customized experiences designed specifically for the organization.

The emphasis is not only on learning skills, but practicing new ways of being in relationship together.

04 — Integration + Ongoing Practice

A powerful workshop can create insight. Sustainable culture requires practice.

Together, we explore how discoveries from the engagement can become part of everyday organizational life through communication practices, relational agreements, rituals, check-ins, leadership practices, repair processes, or other structures the organization can continue tending long after Open Compass leaves the room.

WHAT WE’RE CULTIVATING

This could be a visually beautiful section with individual words/short phrases rather than paragraphs:

Relational Cohesion
A stronger sense of being part of something together.

Skillful Honesty
The capacity to communicate what is true with clarity, curiosity, responsibility, and care.

Curiosity Through Conflict
Remaining interested in what is happening rather than immediately moving toward blame, avoidance, or defensiveness.

Trust + Psychological Safety
Conditions where people can contribute, question, disagree, acknowledge mistakes, and participate more fully.

Rupture + Repair
Developing ways to address strain rather than allowing unresolved tension to quietly become culture.

Meaningful Participation
People experiencing themselves not merely as employees within a system, but as participants who influence the health of the whole.

Relational Resilience
Strengthening the organization’s capacity to navigate change, difference, uncertainty, and challenge without sacrificing relationship.

GROUNDED IN PRACTICE + INQUIRY

Open Compass is informed by Aubrey’s ongoing graduate study in Transformative Leadership, bringing scholarly inquiry into conversation with years of experience in community organizing, communications, program development, facilitation, event and experience design, and collaborative work.

This ongoing intersection of research and lived practice informs an approach that understands organizations not simply as structures to optimize, but as living systems made up of people in relationship.

EVERY ENGAGEMENT IS DIFFERENT

Organizational engagements are custom-designed based on the size of the organization, scope of inquiry, desired outcomes, length of partnership, and level of facilitation and implementation support.

Initial multi-phase engagements begin around $2,500.

Ongoing organizational partnerships, leadership support, workshops, retreats, and facilitation are available through custom proposals.
